Genealogical research at Diocesan Archive of Palestrina (RM)

The historical archive of the suburbicarian diocese of Palestrina began to be formed, like almost all the other Italian diocesan archives, following the institutional renewal promoted by the Council of Trent (1575) and the consequent peripheral decrees, including in particular the provisions desired by the cardinal Carlo Borromeo in the Milanese provincial councils. Cardinal Marcantonio Colonna, who was an active protagonist of the Council, certainly gave impetus to the prenestine diocese of which he was bishop and, consequently, also to the organization of its curia. This resulted in the formation of a fairly well-organized archive for the time and above all very rich in documents, many of which have survived to the present day.
